That Secret Ingredient: Cooking with CBD Oil

Do you find cooking and eating relaxing? If your answer is yes, have you ever thought about re-vamping your favourite recipes by adding CBD oil into the mix? CDB oil is generating a lot of buzz across the natural health food sector due to its seemingly endless health benefits. These benefits range from pain and anxiety relief to improved cognitive function to weight maintenance. Cooking can be an obvious place to start experimenting with CBD oil, and is also a great outlet for creativity! The flavour combinations and doses you can try are limitless; however, there are some tips and tricks to consider before adding CBD oil to your next culinary masterpiece.

CBD is one of hundreds of naturally occurring compounds (cannabinoids) extracted from the flowers and leaves of the cannabis plant. Unlike THC (the well-known psychoactive element that produces a brain high), CBD will not affect your cognitive ability. Instead, CBD works to produce a calming sensation in the body. When considering adding any new health supplement to your diet, it is important to take note of the dose and consult your doctor if you have any existing medical conditions.

Without further ado, it’s time to get your apron on and learn the basics of introducing CBD into your kitchen cabinet!

Combine CBD Oil with Other Fats

CBD is a cannabinoid, which is a naturally fat-soluble compound. This means that when extracted, CBD occurs as an oil, and thus requires fats to dissolve into. Combining CBD oil with ingredients such as coconut oil or butter will allow you to receive a fuller spectrum of benefits.

Tip: Does adding CBD oil into your morning coffee or smoothie sound enticing? Try a water-soluble CBD for these options, as oil will simply separate. Companies are scrambling to offer more CBD products specifically created for combing with liquids. If you’re starting out with oil, try adding it along with a touch of coconut oil – the presence of oil will raise the bio-availability of the compound for more effective uptake.

Keep the Heat Down!

When cooking or baking with CBD oil, avoid placing it over direct heat or letting the temperature increase above 200° Celsius. Burning the oil will affect the dosage and make the taste bitter. You may have to adjust your recipes to cook at a lower temperature for a longer amount of time.

Tip: Don’t have the patience for baking? Try using CBD oil as a garnish – add a drizzle to your salad dressing, toast, eggs, soup, curry, or into a creamy tomato or pesto sauce. No need to worry about burning anything!

When to use Refined vs. Unrefined Oils

Refined oils do not have that obvious ‘herb-like’ taste, making them more suitable for addition to coffee, tea, smoothies and generally sweet recipes. Unrefined oils will be more effective for savory creations,

such as those containing strong herbs or spices. Here, the ingredients will come together to enhance each other. Try pairing CBD with ‘bold’ flavors such as rosemary and oregano. Not into herb-forward dishes? In this case, stick to a refined oil regardless of what you’re cooking. Unrefined oils contain more amino acids and vitamins as they have been less chemically processed, but both oils will provide health benefits – yum!

Tip: Don’t rush – taking time and allowing the CBD to bind and mix with your other ingredients (i.e. olive oil, coconut oil, milk etc.) will allow for maximum taste and effects. Adjusting the ratios of your recipes to incorporate CBD oil will take trial and error, and will vary each time based on how many people you are cooking for, and what type of oil you are cooking with.

Finally – Some Food Ideas!

Consider adding CBD oil to some crowd favourites:

  • Balsamic vinaigrette – Mix CBD oil along with the standard olive oil that the recipe calls for – try other salad dressings as well.
  • Sauces, Curries or Stews – CBD oil adds great flavor to hearty meals which already call for cream, butter and oil in the recipe.
  • Sweets galore – Add CBD-infused butter to your favourite brownie, cupcake or cookie recipe.
  • Savory snacks – Cover kale or spinach in a CBD and olive-oil mixture for oven-baked chips – try this with roasted veggies as well.
  • For that morning boost – Add a dash of CBD oil into your morning smoothie or coffee for a boost in productivity and reduced anxiety levels.

Still nervous about cooking with CBD oil? If you’re not ready to explore this in your own kitchen, opt for some ready-made CBD creations for more inspiration. Creating your own CBD-infused food can be fun, and also a great way to save money. As with any recipe, there will be plenty of adjustments and tweaking along the way to achieve the desired taste and the effects you want. Start with very small amounts, and let your creativity flow. Just be sure to let your dinner guests know of your secret ingredient!
